Should You Take Aspirin if You Have a Toothache?

Should You Take Aspirin if You Have a Toothache?Toothaches can be caused by a variety of reasons. The most common cause for a toothache is worn enamel that has caused a cavity in the tooth. Enamel protects the sensitive layer underneath the teeth and can gradually be worn away due to things like grinding teeth and acid in foods.

Toothaches can range from being mildly painful to very painful and affect your quality of life because you may not be able to eat the foods you enjoy the most.

Many people reach for aspirin when experiencing toothaches, but it is not the best option. Many may not recognize that aspirin is highly acidic. The acidity in aspirin can wear at the enamel of the teeth just like any other highly acidic food or drink, so it is not the best method for dealing with a toothache as it can cause more damage to the enamel of the affected tooth.

Chewable aspirin is particularly detrimental to the teeth as it can stick to the teeth after being chewed. This is why it is important to avoid giving your children chewable aspirin if they have issues with pain in their teeth. However, there are other methods for pain relief when experiencing a toothache.

Other Methods to Use

While aspirin is not great for you or your children's teeth, there are other methods to reduce the pain felt from a toothache. A go-to method for many people who experience tooth pain due to physical damage is a cold pack. The cold pack can soothe the pain by numbing the area of pain and also reduce any swelling that has occurred from the trauma. It is important to give your skin a break though. The cold from the pack can be harmful to you if kept in place for too long.

Experiencing a toothache is no fun and could be a sign of more complications than just the pain itself. If you are currently experiencing a toothache, we advise you to schedule an appointment with us so that we can find the source of the problem. No pain relief methods will solve the cause of the pain and only temporarily help.
