Why Having Level Fillings is So Important for Good Oral HealthYou hope that you take good care of your teeth and never have any problems. Despite your best efforts, you still end up with a cavity and need to have a filling. When you get the filling, you go back to the hope that your oral hygiene habits will prevent future problems.

But what if the filling is not perfect. A good filling is supposed to be level, but that does not always happen. If a filling is not level, there are a few things that you may need to worry about.

What to Do When Fillings Are Too High

One problem that occurs with fillings is that they are too high. Instead of being level, there is too much filling material and it is higher. This can lead to a few different problems. High fillings can lead to additional wear of the enamel of the tooth with the filling and the surrounding teeth. When the enamel erodes, it opens teeth up to decay and cavities.

A high filling can also have more sensitivity to heat and cold because of the extra exposure. It can cause you to change your bite, which can impact the health of all the teeth. It is not always easy to notice a high filling until there is some damage, but it is something to watch out for.

If a Filling is Shallow

The opposite of a high filling is a shallow filling. When there is not enough material in place for the filling, voids will occur. The voids are a place where bacteria and debris can become trapped. If you cannot clean the filling properly, it can lead to the formation of plaque which can cause tooth decay, cavities and gum disease.

The goal for all fillings is for them to be level. There are times when this may not happen. If it does, you need to know what the risks are and what to look for so you can get it fixed. Call us so we can explain it further.
