What to Do When You First Notice a Toothache?

What to Do When You First Notice a Toothache?Toothaches can vary from annoying to downright debilitating. They can produce pain that is constant, chronic, or intermittent. Regardless of the severity or frequency of a toothache, the first thing you should do is contact us.

Toothaches can be caused by a variety of problems. Gum disease can cause pain in the tooth in the area the gum disease is formed. You can get toothaches from small chips or cracks in your tooth. It can be a sign of tooth decay leading to a cavity.

What Are Other Causes of Toothaches?

Sometimes toothaches are simply a result of normal wear and tear on your tear, particularly as you get older. Loss of enamel on your teeth can cause sensitivity to hot or cold as well as a toothache. This can be caused by many things, including aggressive brushing.

If you grind your teeth, it can result in nerve damage to the tooth and could cause your teeth to decay. If the pain is in the back of your teeth near the jaw, tooth grinding could have caused you to develop temporal mandibular joint syndrome or TMJ.

If swelling accompanies the pain you could have an abscess, or infection in your tooth or gums. You could also have impacted wisdom teeth. Sometimes, as they come in, they crowd the other teeth and move them around so the wisdom tooth can come in. You could also have a sinus infection.

Can I Fix It Myself?
When you have a toothache that won't go away, you should never attempt a home remedy. There is no way for you to know if the pain is indicative of a larger dental problem or even a medical problem. If you feel any pain when you eat, drink or are just relaxing, come to see us.

If the problem is medical rather than dental related, we can frequently give you an idea of the cause and will advise you to see your physician.
