Can Managing Stress Reduce Your Risk of Developing Gum Disease?

Can Managing Stress Reduce Your Risk of Developing Gum Disease? We all have stress in our lives, and hearing that we need to reduce stress can actually cause us to feel even more stress. It is important though, not only for your mental and physical health, but for your oral health as well.

Stress Causes Problems

Stress can cause more problems in our oral health than many people are aware of. Feeling overstressed can lead to teeth grinding (bruxism) canker sores on the gum tissue and cheeks, TMJ and inflammation of the gums. When our stress levels are high, our immune systems become compromised and that leaves the mouth at risk for developing periodontal disease.

A decreased immune system has a direct effect on your oral health because bacteria naturally form in your mouth. When the immune system is compromised, these bacteria can begin to eat away at the enamel of your teeth and cause inflammation of the gums. This is how gum disease starts; the tissue becomes inflamed, which can lead to infection and disease.

Reduce Stress, Decrease Your Risk

We realize that this sounds easier than it really is, but we are here to help you. One of the most important things you can do to begin to reduce the stress in your life is recognizing what causes your stress and identify how you deal with it.

Once you have been honest with yourself and started tracking your stress levels, you can begin to address the stress in your life and reducing it where it is possible. Try keeping a journal and noting especially stressful situations and how you are dealing with them.

Of course, maintaining your oral health is another big way to reduce your risk for developing gum disease. Make sure that you are brushing twice daily and flossing at least once per day and call our office to schedule your next check up.
