Does Having a Cleaner Tongue Really Impact Your Overall Oral Health?Maintaining good oral health includes more than simply brushing and flossing your teeth every day. Things like nutrition and diet, lifestyle choices, genetics and even tongue scraping also play an important role in keeping your mouth healthy and clean.

Wait, what? Cleaning your tongue? The answer to that is 'absolutely!' cleaning your tongue daily has a big impact on your overall oral health.

Keeping Your Mouth Clean

Brushing your teeth twice a day is an excellent start to maintaining good oral health. Take your time and make sure that you brush every single tooth, every surface of every tooth, and don't forget the floss! Gently working the floss in between each tooth and under the gum line helps remove plaque and tartar build up from those hard to reach places.

After brushing and flossing, using a specially designed tongue cleaner, start at the back of your tongue and gently scrape forward. Rinse your scraper after each scrape to clean off the debris. This removes 30 percent more bacteria, food debris and plaque that simply brushing your tongue with your toothbrush.

Tongue scraping also helps reduce and eliminate bad breath as long as you are doing it consistently. At least once per day is our recommendation for our patients. Removing bacteria is key when it comes to preventing cavities, tooth decay and periodontal disease (gum disease) so the more you clean, the more you reduce your risk.

Other Ways to Improve Your Oral Health

Using fluoride based toothpaste and mouthwashes are a great way to improve your oral health, as well as brushing your gums and teeth twice a day. Set a timer and make sure you are brushing at least two minutes. Drinking plenty of water helps maintain good oral health along with eating plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Don't forget to keep your regularly scheduled cleanings with our office as well! We look forward to seeing you soon!
