Is There Anything About Tongue Tie Recovery to Know Ahead of Time?If you have opted for corrective surgery for your tongue tie (or, if you are a parent whose child is getting the surgery), there are some things you should know about recovery.

Armed with the proper knowledge, there are a few steps you can take now in order to shorten the length of time required for a full and complete recovery.

Stock Up on Over the Counter Painkillers

While surgery for a tongue tie is fairly routine and only minimally invasive, there will be some discomfort after the procedure. Everyone's experience varies—some people experience only minor discomfort, while others have a bit more.

Still, chances are pretty good that the discomfort will be minor enough that it can be addressed with over the counter medication such as ibuprofen or a similar medication.

Go ahead and stock your medicine cabinet prior to the procedure. If you are not feeling well after the tongue tie surgery, the last thing you want to have to deal with is going to the store.

Get Some Latex Gloves
As part of your recovery, you will likely have to do some stretching exercises with the tongue. It is a good idea for you to wear gloves during this, especially if you have long fingernails. Even if you have short nails, wearing gloves reduces the chance of an accidental injury during the stretches.

As an added bonus, wearing latex gloves will help improve your grip on the tongue. Trying to stretch a tongue with only a slippery grip can cause unnecessary discomfort.

Be Patient
Finally, remember that some things just take time. Recovering from a tongue tie procedure will be relatively fast, but it's unlikely things will be completely healed in the first few days. Fortunately, the tissue in the mouth heals faster than anywhere else in the body. So be patient, and the process will be over before you know it.
